❃ Slender, graceful, and perfectly camouflaged among leaves, the Chinese mantis is a remarkable predator with a long green body, triangular head, and powerful raptorial forelegs folded into its familiar “praying” pose. Its large eyes and freely swiveling head give it an almost watchful expression, while its elongated form allows it to blend naturally into stems, grasses, and garden vegetation.

❃ The Chinese mantis is an ambush hunter, often remaining completely still until an unsuspecting insect wanders within reach. In a lightning-fast movement, its folded forelegs shoot forward to seize the prey and hold it securely while the mantis feeds. Its diet consists mainly of insects and spiders, although larger females have occasionally been recorded taking small vertebrates.

❃ Native to China and other parts of Asia, the Chinese mantis has also become established in parts of North America after being introduced in the late 1800s. It inhabits meadows, gardens, shrubs, and other vegetation-rich environments, where its green or brown coloring provides excellent concealment. After growing through several molts, adults reproduce and leave behind distinctive protective egg cases, completing a life cycle that generally lasts about a year.

3. Let it breathe. Most plush regain their full shape within 1–3 days, while larger or denser designs can take up to a week.

4. Smooth any flattened or creased fur with your fingers or a soft brush as it fluffs back up.

5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.
